Directions to Ensenada, and then Punta Banda from Tecate

You might want to keep in mind 15-20 miles per hour is more that enough in town (Tecate)

If you are going through Tecate after you cross, go forward after passing through the border gate. At the second light, there should be a park on the corner (across the street and on your left). Make a left turn here and pass the park on your right. Go to the next stop light and make a right turn. The park should still be on your right.

Take your time, go slow... there is a lot to see and the kids are running all over the place. In a couple of blocks you should pass a McDonald's on your left. Stay on this road, it will take you to Ensenada. You will go through the valley's wine country.

There may be a military check point inspection. No big deal; they will ask where you are coming from and where you are going. Just tell them. They will give you a quick look over and send you on your way. Try not to go over 65 until you know the road. Before you know it, you will be coming off a hill and you will see the Pacific Ocean.

You will cross over Highway 1; go to the left and you should be going South. You are just outside of Ensenada. When you get into Ensenada there is a port on your right. You should see a Huge Flag Pole on your right. There may or may not be a flag on it. (depends on the wind)

Just as you're coming into town, there will be a "Y" intersection with highway signs. To get to Punta Banda bear to the right. If you go left here, you will be going towards the tourist section of Ensenada and then more into town.

To get to Punta Banda bear to this intersection, the sign should say "San Quintin" or Highway 1. Follow this road through Ensenada. At the end of this road there will be a Navy Base on your right. Turn left with this road. Pass the next intersection. Turn right at the next intersection (Reforma).

Follow Reforma until you get to a large green highway sign that says "La Bufadora" and bear to your right here. Follow this 2 lane highway for about 7-8 miles, and be careful of the 5 speed bumps along the way. They are marked, but sometimes the signs are hard to see. Be careful on this road, there are people, animals, and crazy drivers to watch for.

Follow this road until you get to the small town of Cantu. You'll know it when you see Sharkey's Bar on your left, then the Fruteria on your right, then the yellow Pharmacy on your left. Pass all this and continue on the road.

Soon you will come to a dirt/gravel road that goes to your right. There is a small hand-painted sign that says "Agua Caliente" with an arrow pointing to the right. Turn right here. Follow this road, it will turn into asphalt. Continue forward until you get to a speed bump with a "guard shack" on the right side of the road.

The next dirt road on your left is the road into the Marazul Camp.

You might want to keep in mind 15-20 miles per hour is more that enough in town.

Now, when you cross the border, if you get a red light and/or bell slowly pull over. Smile, Smile, Smile. The cops will do a quick look at your stuff. Smile, look like a tourist, act normal like an American.

Once you cross over the border, you should be on the toll road in about 5-10 minutes depending on traffic. The cops will light you up, if you are talking on your cell while driving. Some times even the passenger. (ha ha)

If you are going through Tijuana, right after you cross you will go under the "bridge to freedom". Try to stay in the right lane. There will be a road that goes to the right and goes across an over-pass. Follow the signs for Ensenada. (If you miss this you will be going into downtown T.J.)

After you cross over the over-pass: Follow the signs for Ensenada. Try to stay in the right hand lane, you will be on a very tight road-- it will go up a steep hill (to your right you should see a lot of work being done by the U.S. on the border).

Then you will go down a steep hill (everybody will be trying to cut in front of you, at the last minute) it has a turn off at the bottom of the hill. Stay to the right.

There might be an inspection right before you get to the toll road. Stick to the Scenic Route; it is like our Pacific Coast Highway with three tolls. It will be less that 5 miles from where you crossed the border to the toll road.

The toll (three times) is 26 pesos each toll. This works out to be somewhere between $1.75 and $2.00 depending on the current exchange rate (3/1/09).

Take your time, enjoy the new sites, and the drive down the coast.
You should be going South after you get on the toll road. Stay on the toll road and you will end up in Ensenada.
